The garden was originally designed by Simeon Godeau, a student of André Le Nôtre who famously created the gardens at Versailles, focusing on geometric motifs and royal elegance.

Tips for Your Charlottenburg Palace Photos

There is so much beauty and history when photographing at the Charlottenburg old palace. While the palace interior requires advanced permits and location fees for formal wedding photography, the palace gardens welcome sessions for free as long as you don’t disturb other visitors. The gardens are free to enter from 8 a.m. until dark, Monday through Sunday, making it easy to schedule your photography session.

However, there are two practical limitations to keep in mind:

Restroom Access: The barrier-free toilets are located on the ground floor inside Charlottenburg Palace, which can be a considerable walk depending on where you are in the park. If you're planning to bring a second outfit for your session, changing facilities outdoors are limited. Some of my resourceful couples, like Erika, have discreetly changed behind bushes in quiet corners of the garden, or I've created a makeshift "dressing room" with a large blanket in a secluded spot.

Weather Considerations: The gardens offer limited shelter in case of heavy rain; the palace itself being the only real refuge. I always suggest checking the weather forecast in advance and bringing a transparent or black umbrella just in case.
