Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin, Germany: How to Plan Your Civil Wedding

Pretty exterior of Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin

The Hochzeitsvilla in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf registry office in Berlin is a modern, intimate venue for exchanging vows that’s popular year-round. With its central location, proximity to beautiful reception spaces, and its easy process for a seamless, legal wedding, it’s no wonder many couples choose this villa for their ceremony venue. For Mathis and Brittany, there was no hesitation to book the villa for their big day, especially since they wanted an intimate wedding that felt authentic to them and was easy to plan from start to finish.

As a Berlin-based wedding photographer, I had the pleasure of being a part of their celebration and documenting every detail. I have more than a few Hochzeitsvilla weddings under my belt, and I want to share everything you need to know for planning a civil wedding at the villa. From guest capacity to where to take photos and how to plan a reception, here are insider tips for planning your own celebration at Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin.

The Highlights of a Civil Wedding at Hochzeitsvilla

A wedding at Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin is perfect for couples who want an intimate, straightforward ceremony that’s easy to plan. The space offers several benefits for those planning a civil wedding in Berlin:

  • Modern, intimate rooms to say “I do”: There are two modern rooms to choose from for a ceremony, and although they are a bit dim for photos (more on where to take photos later), they’re still a great spot to exchange vows in front of loved ones.

  • Elegant staircase and beautiful exterior: The outside of the Hochzeitsvilla in Steglitz-Zehlendorf is my favorite part of the venue. It features an open staircase with a loggia, offering a beautiful, picturesque photo opportunity for you and your guests as you make a grand exit after the ceremony.

  • Outdoor green spaces nearby: There’s even a park and memorial, Denkmal Opfer Nationalsozialismus, in front of the villa that’s small but very pretty, and a convenient place for relaxed post-wedding celebrations and photos, especially during the fall time.

  • Engaging, fun officiants: The Hochzeitsvilla also has very personable officiants who are welcoming and kind, and make the day that much more special. I loved getting to know the officiant at Brittany and Mathis’ civil wedding, and he made the day so seamless and fun.

The Hochzeitsvilla in the Steglitz-Zehlendorf registry office is a top-rated Berlin venue that’s easy to get to and conveniently close to green spaces for elegant photos. If you want to plan an easy civil wedding in Berlin, I’d highly recommend considering this villa for your ceremony.

How to Plan the Ceremony at Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin

Inspiration from Brittany & Mathis’ Civil Wedding

If you’re convinced on a wedding at Hochzeitsvilla, but still want to gather inspiration, let’s take a look at Brittany and Mathis’ civil wedding at the villa.

The couple invited about 50 guests to their intimate wedding, with 23 family members who attended the short ceremony inside the villa, and many friends and colleagues who gathered outside to give them a warm send-off with red and white balloons when they exited the building.

The Hochzeitsvilla and staff make it easy to customize the space for your wedding. For Brittany and Mathis, that meant setting up their own reception desk at the park in front of the villa with champagne, lush florals, cards, and gifts.

Every detail from the day was intentionally designed and sourced, like Brittany’s thrifted vintage wedding dress, to the games the guests could interact with, and the homemade food and welcome sign featuring framed artwork on an easel.

Where to Have a Reception for a Hochzeitsvilla Wedding

There are several spots nearby Hochzeitsvilla for an outdoor ceremony.

For Matthis and Brittany’s reception, they traveled to their backyard garden by Lake Waldsee, about a 7-minute drive from Hochzetisvilla. The couple has access to the garden because they live there; however, a nearby private villa, Haus am Waldsee, is available for public weddings on Mondays, excluding public holidays, until 10 PM at the latest. You can fill out a form to find out more information and see if it’s available for your reception or ceremony.

There are a few alternatives for an indoor-outdoor reception following a Hochzeitsvilla civil wedding:

  • Gästehaus Blumenfisch is a 12-minute drive from Hochzeitsvilla and is a charming villa with lakeside gardens, a terrace, in-house catering, and event planning support for an easy-to-plan reception.

  • Liebermann-Villa is a fromer summer house of painter Max Liebermann, now serving as an event rental space right on the lake, with a permanent Impressionist art collection and a historic pier and pavilion on-site. It’s about 14 minutes away from Hochzeitsvilla.

  • Ballhuas Wedding is an indoor-outdoor event space with a luxurious ballroom, elegant chandeliers, and outdoor spaces with statues to complete the look, and it’s about 35 minutes from Hochzeitsvilla.

There are also several parks nearby that you can set up a small reception area for a more relaxed celebration. And if you want to host guests, there are countless Berlin hotels for accommodations. Whatever it is you’re looking for, Hochzeitsvilla is conveniently located for a close-by reception that’s equally photo-ready and easy to get to.

Where to Take Photos at Hochzeitsvilla in Berlin

The only place I wouldn’t highly recommend for group and couple photos is inside the villa. It’s quite dim and not the most beautiful, but there are many surrounding areas to snap photos:

  • The entrance steps are a classic place for photo opportunities. With the elegant archways of the villa towering above and plenty of steps for your guests, it’s a great place for not only a send off but for many couple and group photos. Plus, since it’s outside there’s ample lighting for beautiful frame-worthy photos.

  • The front garden is filled with fresh blooms and flowerbeds for a romantic photo setting. Plus, there’s a bench on the lawn for a casual setting for couple photos.

  • Berlin Botanical Gardens is a nearby spot that’s truly a magical setting for photos, featuring a lake, picteruqseue trails, and over 20,000 types of plants for a lush backdrop.
