If you're dreaming of proposing in Berlin, you've probably already come across iconic landmarks like Brandenburg Gate or Museum Island. They're beautiful, historic, and instantly recognisable. But they're also some of the busiest places in the city.
As a Berlin proposal photographer, I've photographed surprise proposals all over the city for couples visiting from the US, the UK, and across Europe. Time and time again, I find myself recommending one place that few people have ever even thought of: Peacock Island Berlin, or Berlin Pfaueninsel.
Hidden just outside Wannsee, Peacock Island feels like stepping into a fairytale. After a short ferry ride, you're welcomed by peaceful woodland paths, open meadows, thriving rose gardens, a charming white castle, and, if you're lucky, several free-roaming peacocks wandering through the landscape. It's quiet, whimsical, and wonderfully creates a romantic atmosphere for your surprise proposal.
Why Berlin Peacock Island is the Best Kept Secret Location for a Marriage Proposal (Heiratsantrag)
Known locally as Berlin Pfaueninsel, Peacock Island is unlike anywhere else in the city. As part of Berlin's UNESCO World Heritage landscape, the island has been carefully preserved for generations. There are no cars, no city noise. Instead, it feels as if you just entered an idyllic countryside: birds chirping, leaves rustling in the breeze, and the occasional call of a peacock echoing through the gardens. It feels peaceful without ever feeling rushed, making it an ideal setting for popping the question.
The scenery changes beautifully as you explore. Historic houses sprinkle around the island, colourful rose gardens bloom throughout the warmer months, and quiet lakeside views appear around almost every corner. The elegant white palace adds a fairy-tale touch that makes every proposal feel effortlessly romantic. From a photographer's perspective, this variety is one of the island's greatest perks.
Privacy is another reason I recommend Berlin Peacock Island so often. Unlike many of Berlin's famous attractions, visitors naturally spread out after a very short trip via Peacock Island ferry. Even during the busier months, it's usually easy to find peaceful corners where you can enjoy an intimate proposal without feeling like you're being watched by large crowds.
How to Get to Peacock Island from Berlin
One question I receive quite often is how to get to Peacock Island Berlin without hiring a car. Getting to Berlin Pfaueninse (Peacock Island) from the city centre is fairly straightforward using Berlin's public transport.
If you're staying in central Berlin within the AB fare zones, I usually recommend taking the S-Bahn, S1 or S7, to Wannsee Station, followed by Bus 218 to the final stop, Pfaueninsel. Bus 218 usually runs every hour on weekdays and every 30 minutes on weekends, although seasonal timetable changes can happen, so make sure to plan your trip in advance to avoid last-minute stress.
From Wannsee, the bus journey takes around 16 minutes and drops you just a short walk from the dock. From the dock, the ferry only takes 1 minute to carry you to the island, but you might wait 5-15 minutes for the ferry to pick you up. I will talk about the Peacock Island ferry information in detail in the following section.
Depending on where you're staying in Berlin, the entire one-way journey from central Berlin typically takes around 1.5h.
Peacock Island Ferry (Fähre Pfaueninsel) Information
Where can I buy the ferry ticket?
1. Online(Recommended): The easier way to buy your ticket is to buy it directly online before your trip and simply follow the online instructions. You will receive your digital ticket as PDF via email. You don’t need to print it out for the trip.
2. Offline: You can also buy the ticket at the ticket machine at the dock when you arrive in person. The machine only accepts Visa, MasterCard, Girocard and coins. You can’t buy the tickets from the ferry staff.
How much does a ticket cost?
The return-ticket covers both the trip to the island and back, it costs 6€ per adult or 5€ reduced. For families with 2 adults and up to 4 children (18 or under) it will be 12€. The Peacock Island ferry (Fähre Pfaueninsel) does not include the entry permission to Peacock Island Castle (Schloss Pfaueninsel), which can only be purchased at 8€ at the ticket office at the castle in-person on the day of visit.
Can I take my dog or my bike to the ferry or island?
Unfortunately it is not permitted, in order to protect the UNESCO landscape and nature reserve on Peacock Island Berlin.
What’s the opening hours of the ferry?
March to October: 10:00 - 18:00 (Monday to Sunday)
November & December: 10:00 - 16:00 (Monday to Sunday)
New Year (January 1st): 11:00 - 16:00
The last admission to the ferry is 45 minutes before it closes.
How often does the ferry come?
There is no fixed timetable but it usually comes every 10 to 15 minutes or so.
How long does the ferry ride last?
Only less than 1 minute! Probably the shortest ferry ride you would ever experience.
How will the ferry staff check my ticket?
You can simply show your digital or physical ticket to the staff while boarding the ferry.

The Best Proposal Locations on Peacock Island Berlin
In Front of the Schloss Pfaueninsel (Castle of Peacock Island)
The castle of Peacock Island is undoubtedly one of the most iconic locations. The elegant white palace is framed by centuries-old trees and flower gardens in the summer, which creates a timeless backdrop, especially during the soft morning light. Because visitors naturally continue exploring after arriving, it's often possible to find peaceful moments here without feeling surrounded by crowds.
The castle also photographs beautifully from several different angles, allowing us to capture both the proposal itself and romantic portraits afterwards without needing to move very far.
By the Fountain (Fontäne)
The fountain is another beloved location that feels both elegant and relaxed, it’s about 10 minutes walk from the castle.
Surrounded by beautiful trees and seasonal greenery, it offers enough open space for a discreet proposal while still feeling wonderfully private. On many occasions I've even seen peacocks wandering nearby, adding an unexpected touch of magic to the photographs.
Note: In cold seasons (roughly from November to April next year), the fountain water will be turned off.
In front of the Luise Temple (Gedächtnistempel für Königin Luise)
If you continue walking down the path from the fountain for another 12 minutes, the Luise Temple (Gedächtnistempel für Königin Luise) is another gorgeous, private spot to pop the question.
When you walk into this side of the island, it feels as if the time stands still for a moment. You will also see a beautiful view of a large meadow in front of the temple, and if you are lucky, you will see cows pacing around and feeding on grass. It looks like a painting of a renaissance landscape.

Rose garden on Peacock Island
The rose garden would be a perfect place for engagement photos in warmer seasons, not only because the roses and summer flowers are blooming, but this is one of the spots where peacocks are often seen walking around and taking a nap.
Diary farmhouse on Peacock Island
On the other end of the Peacock Island once you loop around it, you will find a historic dairy farmhouse built in 1794 to 1795. The building is well-preserved until this day and it’s pretty impressive to see how life looked like in the past. Similar to Luise Temple, the building faces a large meadow with peaceful nature everywhere you can see.
How busy can it get on Peacock Island?
What I love about Berlin Pfaueninsel is how quiet it is for most of the time, it rarely feels crowded, especially compared with Berlin's famous landmarks, such as Brandenburg Gate or Museum Island, where hundreds of visitors can gather at any time of day, Berlin Peacock Island naturally spreads people out. Once everyone steps off the ferry, visitors head off in different directions to explore the gardens, woodland trails, castle and lakeside paths. Within just a few minutes, it often feels as though you have the island almost to yourselves.
If you're hoping for the quietest experience possible, I usually recommend planning your proposal on a weekdaybetween10:00 am and 1:00 pm. The light is often soft and beautiful, temperatures are usually comfortable during spring and summer, and you'll have a much better chance of finding peaceful corners for your special moment.
Weekends and public holidays naturally attract more visitors, particularly during the afternoon. Even then, Peacock Island never feels overwhelming in the same way that Berlin's city centre attractions can. With a little planning, it's still very possible to find a private spot surrounded by nature.
How I help you scout the location on Peacock Island
When I help couples plan their proposal on Berlin Peacock Island, I always arrive at least 30 minutes prior to our agreed meeting time. I will hop on the island first, scout the location, mark your spot and send you photos via Whatsapp with instructions on how to find your spots. I keep telling my couples that it’s better for them to arrive late than early. This allows me to have enough time to explore the island, making sure everything looks fine, or improvising something along the way in case our agreed meeting point doesn’t work out. Can You Easily See the Peacocks?
For many couples, spotting the island's famous residents is one of the highlights of the visit.
While I can't ever promise exactly where the peacocks will be, I've been lucky enough to see them during every visit. On a good day, you might spot three to five peacocks wandering freely across the island, completely unbothered by the visitors around them.
Over the years, I've seen them strolling through the rose garden, resting beside the fountain, wandering across open lawns, and even taking afternoon naps near the charming Summer Pavilion. Sometimes they'll suddenly appear along a woodland path just as you least expect it.
How Much Time Should You Plan?
Although the island itself isn't particularly large, it's well worth slowing down and allowing yourself plenty of time to enjoy everything it has to offer. If you're simply visiting for a leisurely walk with spontaneous pauses, most people spend around 1.5 hours to 3 hours exploring the whole area.
For a surprise proposal on Berlin Peacock Island, I usually recommend setting aside around 45 minutes to one hour for your photography session. This gives us plenty of time to capture the proposal itself, celebrate together, and create a relaxed collection of portraits without feeling rushed.
Many of my couples choose to make the visit into an easy half-day adventure. They arrive around 45 minutes after the island opens, enjoy the proposal, spend some time exploring the island together, stop for coffee or lunch, and simply soak up the peaceful surroundings before returning to central Berlin.
Are There Restaurants and Toilets on the Island?
Restaurant and Café:
On the island itself, Kaffeegarten auf der Liegewiese is a charming café where you can enjoy coffee, cake, light refreshments and a well-deserved moment together after your proposal. Sitting outside with views of the surrounding greenery is a wonderful way to let everything sink in. Just across from the ferry landing on the mainland, you'll also find Wirtshaus zur Pfaueninsel, a traditional German restaurant that's perfect if you'd like to celebrate with a leisurely lunch or dinner before continuing your day in Berlin.Toilets:
On Peacock Island, there are two public toilets. One is right at the dock where you board the ferry, the other one is next to the Café, Kaffeegarten auf der Liegewiese. If you are on the mainland side of the island, you can also use the toilet at the restaurant Wirtshaus zur Pfaueninsel.
